Family background

Sreypov’s parents divorced and abandoned them, leaving them in the care of their grandmother. Sreypov and her siblings previously lived in their grandmother’s house, but it has now become too old and unsafe to stay in. As a result, the house is now used only to store rice straw for cattle, and the children have moved in with their grandmother’s son, who is also a widower. Despite their strong desire to continue their education, their grandmother is struggling to support them. Her only source of income is selling cow dung, which earns her just 7,500 Riel (S$2.25) per month (3 bags at 2,500 Riel (S$0.75) per bag). Occasionally, her son gives her an additional 5,000 (S$1.50) to 10,000 (S$3) Riel to help cover expenses for the children. However, as the children grow, their needs and school expenses are increasing beyond what she can afford. The family receives no government support and does not have a poor certificate. However, the village chief has offered to issue them a “Risk Family Certificate,” which only provides free hospital fees. Their grandmother decided to send Sreypov and her siblings to HVPV so that they can receive care and able to continue going to school.
