Family background

“Sreynet is a cheerful 6-year-old girl studying in grade 1. Both her parents work as laborers in their village, each earning around 250,000 Riel (approx. S$130) monthly. However, the family faces the heavy burden of a 5,000,000 Riel (about S$1,632) debt, taken on to cover medical expenses when her father was hospitalized. Each month, they are required to repay 200,000 Riel (S$65) in principal and interest, leaving little to support their daily needs. The majority of their income is spent on essentials, with 150,000 Riel (approx. S$48.90) used on rice each month, and around 10,000 Riel (S$3.20) spent daily to feed their family of four. Even with their combined income, they struggle to make ends meet, as debt and basic necessities consume nearly all they earn.”
