Family background

Chanleap is a determined 9-year-old boy in grade 4. His parents work various odd jobs, earning a combined monthly income of around S$200. The family faces the challenge of repaying a 5,000,000 Riel (approx. S$1,630) loan, which they took out to build a modest home. Each month, they must repay 300,000 Riel (S$97.80) in principal and interest, alongside 140,000 Riel (S$45.60) for rice to support their family of five. Due to their limited means, Chanleap’s parents cannot afford his school textbooks. To help him continue his studies, a relative and a monk brought him the textbooks.
