Family background

Roth Rathana is a 10-year-old studying in grade 2 and he has one set of uniform to use for a week for the whole year. Every day he will walk 1.5km to school as his parents cannot afford to get him a bicycle. His father is a daily odd job laborer earning around U$150 /S$197 a month. As his parents are very poor with no house, they are staying with his grandparent and receiving government help of 30,000riels = S$9 a month. Most of the earning from his father is used to buy food and rice for the family. He spent 350000riels =S$105 a month to buy rice alone hence do not have extra money to buy uniform and bicycle for the children to go to school.
