Family background

Soun Chantha is a 5-year-old boy in grade 1, whose parents work as construction laborers in another province. Their combined income is about US$300 a month, but only when they can find work. Despite their hard efforts, they are only able to send 150,000 riels (approximately S$49) home each month. This entire amount goes toward buying rice for their large family of seven, but it still isn’t enough. The family spends 260,000 riels (about S$84) on rice alone each month, leaving them constantly struggling to meet basic needs. To help with expenses, their grandson earns an additional 80,000 riels (S$26) a month by making and selling fishing gear. However, the family remains in severe poverty, relying on government support of 34,000 riels (S$11) a month to survive.
