Family background

Vy Chhorrin is a bright 10-year-old in grade 4, who, along with her siblings, is cared for by her elderly grandparents. Her parents work as construction laborers, earning a daily wage of about US$120 each per month when work is available. Out of their earnings, they send back 50,000 Riel (approx. S$16.30) every month to support their children. The family also receives a government allowance of 62,000 Riel (approx. S$20.24), but these funds fall short of covering even their basic needs. The cost of rice alone reaches 140,000 Riel (approx. S$45.70) each month, meaning their combined income still leaves the family struggling to afford enough food. Often, there simply isn’t enough rice, and they experience frequent hunger.
