Family background

Kim Heng is a 7-year-old boy in grade 2. His father works as a construction laborer, earning around US$50 a month when work is available, while his mother stays home to care for the family. To help meet their needs, the family receives government support of 34,000 Riel (about S$11), but even with this assistance, their resources are not enough to cover their basic necessities. Each month, they spend around 135,000 Riel (approx. S$44) on rice alone to feed a family of 5 members, with an additional daily expense of about S$3 on other food items. Despite their best efforts, Kim Heng’s family struggles to make ends meet, facing constant financial strain.
