Family background

Met Raksa is a 6-year-old boy studying in grade 1. His mother, a widow, works as a laborer far from their village, earning around US$100 a month. She can only send home 200,000 Riels (S$65) each month to support her family. Raksa and his two siblings are left in the care of their grandmother, who is also a widow. The grandmother is disabled after breaking her leg, which makes it difficult for her to work. The family spends 70,000 Riels (S$23) each month on rice, and with only about 5,000 Riels (S$1.62) to spend on food each day, they often go hungry as their meals are never enough. The little money their mother sends is hardly sufficient to cover their basic needs, leaving the family struggling to survive.
