Family background

Ching Sreyheng is a 10-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 6. Her aunt purchased a set of school uniform for her so that she could continue attending school. Sreyheng’s father has passed away, and her mother, now a widow, works as a factory worker in Phnom Penh earning approximately US$210 per month, but she does not send money back to support the family. Sreyheng and her sister live with her 75-year-old grandmother and her aunt’s family, who are also living in poverty. On some days, she receives 5,000 riels as pocket money (approximately SGD 1), but there are many days when she has no pocket money at all, as her aunt struggles financially herself. The household receives government assistance of 102,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 19–20, but this amount is insufficient to meet their daily needs.
