Family background

Tharn Phakdey is a 10-year-old boy currently studying in Grade 4. His father has passed away, and his mother, now a widow, stays at home to care for his elderly grandmother. The family depends on Phakdey’s brother for their daily living expenses. He earns approximately 100,000 riels per month (about SGD 18–19), which is used to buy rice and food for the family, as well as to support Phakdey’s schooling. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government assistance of 54,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 10.
