Family background

Tha Narong is a 10-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 3. She attends school without sufficient textbooks to support her learning. Her father collects scrap around the village, earning approximately 200,000 riels per month (about SGD 36–37), while her mother is a housewife. His income is used to buy rice and food for the family and to send three children to school. The family also has debts, as he has borrowed money to support his children’s upbringing. Their house is in poor condition and leaks when it rains. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government assistance of 74,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 13–14.
