Family background

Lay Lakhina is a 12-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 6. Her father works as a construction worker in another province, earning approximately US$200 per month, while her mother is sick and unable to work. Her father’s income is primarily used to cover medical and hospital expenses for her mother, with the remaining amount spent on rice, food, and school expenses for the children. Due to their financial hardship, the family also receives government support of 54,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 10.
