Family background

Veasna Somrach is an 8-year-old boy currently studying in Grade 2. His father has passed away, and his mother, a widow, works as a factory worker in another province, earning approximately US$210 per month (about SGD 293). She sends back around 100,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 18–19) to support the family. This money is used to cover school expenses for two of her sons and to buy food for the household. She also has a monthly debt repayment for a motorbike purchased to help her commute to work. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government support of 82,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 15.
