Family background

Yorn Chhunly is a 6-year-old boy currently studying in Grade 2. He was able to attend school with a uniform kindly provided by a neighbor. His father is sick with hepatitis B and is unable to work. His mother raises chickens to sell, earning approximately US$100 per month (about SGD 140). The family has incurred significant medical debts, as his father must visit the hospital in Phnom Penh three times a month for treatment. Whatever remains from the mother’s income is used to support Chhunly and his brother’s school expenses, as well as to buy rice and food for the family. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government support of 74,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 13–14.
