Family background

Sokhem Sonya is a 12-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 4. She was able to attend school thanks to a uniform kindly donated by a neighbor. Her father works as a construction worker in the village, earning approximately US$150 per month (about SGD 210), while her mother is a housewife, taking care of the children. The family consists of seven members, and due to financial hardship, two of the children have had to stop schooling to work, earning just enough to support themselves. The family also incurred a debt to build a house, which they were unable to repay. The bank repossessed and sold the house, but they still have to repay the remaining loan balance and interest. The family relies on neighbors for daily food assistance.
