Family background

Saron Phalnin is a 10-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 6. She comes from a low-income family. Her father works far from home on a mango farm in another province, earning approximately US$200 per month, while her mother is a housewife with no source of income. The family does not own a house or any land. Most of the father’s earnings are used to meet basic daily needs such as buying rice and food, as well as paying school-related expenses for their two children. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government assistance of 74,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 25).
