Family background

Buna Sovan Makara is a 9-year-old boy currently studying in Grade 4. His father works as a stone cutter and daily-rate laborer, earning approximately US$200 per month (about SGD 270), while his mother is a housewife with no income. The father’s earnings are used to support the entire family of five, including providing daily necessities such as rice and food, as well as sending two of the three children to school. The family is also burdened with a monthly loan repayment and interest for a motorbike, which is essential for the father’s transportation to work.
