Family background

Heus Srey Theth is a 10-year-old girl studying in Grade 5. Her family is very poor, and a kind neighbor even donated a school uniform so she could attend school. Her father works as a daily-rate construction worker, earning approximately US$200 per month (about SGD 270), while her mother is a daily-wage village laborer, earning around US$100 per month (about SGD 135). The family has four children and is burdened with debt from medical and hospitalization expenses incurred by her grandfather, which they repay with interest every month. Most of the parents’ income is used to cover these medical debts, buy rice and daily necessities, and send two of their children to school.
