Family background

Chorm Nyta is a 9-year-old girl studying in Grade 4. Her father has passed away, and her mother, a widow, works as a cleaner in another province, earning around US$230 per month (approximately SGD 311). She can only send home about 200,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 66) to support the family and pay for her three children’s schooling. Nyta is cared for by her 78-year-old grandmother who runs a small provision shop at home. Nyta is often sick, and the family struggles to pay hospital bills every month
