Family background
Nisa comes from an extremely poor family. Her father was born with a disability in his right hand and leg, preventing him from doing physically demanding work. He once found a job looking after a villager’s ducks on a farm, bringing his wife and four children along to live in a tent. Unfortunately, the harsh living conditions caused the children to fall sick frequently, forcing their mother to take them back home, leaving the father alone at the farm.
The duck owner later sold off all his ducks without paying Nisa’s father, leaving him jobless. Her mother tries to support the family by selling fried and boiled potatoes in the village, but with few buyers, she is struggling to make ends meet.
With six members in the family, they spend 260,000 riels per month on rice alone. Three of the children attend school without pocket money, and only when there’s a little extra, each child receives 3,000 riels. One of them relies on a donated school uniform from a kind neighbor to go to school. Their monthly expenses far exceed their income, and although they receive 34,000 riels in government aid.
As the children grow older, their educational costs will rise, making it even more difficult for the family to support them. The living conditions at home are unsafe for the girls, leading their parents to decision to send Nisa and Chakriya to HVPV for a better future. Meanwhile, their older brother had to stop schooling at age 11 and became a monk because the family could not afford his education.
