Nam Kaknaka is a 5-year-old girl currently studying in kindergarten. She comes from a very poor family background. Her father works in Phnom Penh collecting waste for recycling, where his income is irregular and uncertain. Her mother is a factory worker in Phnom Penh, earning a very modest wage. Together, her parents are only able to send home about 150,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 48). This amount is used almost entirely to buy rice, leaving very little for other food or daily necessities to feed a family of 5 members. Kaknaka and her two siblings are cared for by her grandmother, who also takes responsibility for sending her to school. To provide daily meals, her grandmother often searches around the house and nearby areas for wild-grown vegetables. Despite her efforts, food is often limited.
