Family background

Thon Sana is a 10-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 4. Her father works as a construction worker in Phnom Penh, while her mother has followed him there after recently giving birth and is now staying at home to care for the newborn baby. Sana and her three siblings are being cared for by their grandmother. Each month, her father sends back approximately 100,000 riels (about SGD 18–19) to support the family. This amount is used to buy rice and food for the household, as well as to cover the children’s school expenses. In addition, the father is still repaying hospitalization and medical expenses incurred during his wife’s treatment for kidney stones. With these ongoing financial obligations, it is extremely challenging for him to support a family of six members on his limited income.
