Family background

Dy Simsrong is a 12-year-old boy currently studying in Grade 4. His father has passed away, and his mother, a widow, works as a daily-rate village worker earning approximately 200,000 riels per month (about SGD 36–37). The family has also incurred debts for medical treatment when her children suffered from dengue fever. Her earnings are used to buy rice and food for the family and to send her children to school. On days when she has no money, she sometimes collects rice from her neighbors’ fields to feed the family. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government support of 54,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 10.
