Family background

Pha Rat Seny is an 11-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 4. She and her sister were able to attend school with uniforms kindly donated by a neighbor. Her father works as a construction worker in another province, earning approximately US$200 per month (about SGD 280), and her mother recently gave birth and has moved with him along with their three children. Because her parents live in another province, they are unable to send money back to support Rat Seny and her sister. Rat Seny and her sister are living with their grandmother, who does whatever work she can find in the village to support them. Due to their financial hardship, the family receives government support of 74,000 riels per month, which is approximately SGD 13–14.
