Family background

Veasna Thearith is a 10-year-old boy studying in Grade 3. He received a school uniform from a kind neighbor so he could attend school. Both of his parents work as laborers on a potato farm far from the village, earning a combined income of US$250 per month (approximately SGD 338). The family has incurred debt from medical and hospital treatment for his father following a traffic accident. Veasna and his sibling stay with their grandmother, who cannot find work in the village. They rely on the money sent by their parents and government support of 34,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 11) to cover daily needs and school fees for the two children.
