Family background

Yuth’s parents divorced and abandoned Yuth and his siblings, leaving them in the care of their grandmother. They previously lived in their grandmother’s house, but it has now become too old and unsafe to stay in. As a result, the house is now used only to store rice straw for cattle, and the children have moved in with their grandmother’s son, who is also a widower. Their grandmother is struggling to support them daily. Her only source of income is selling cow dung, which earns her just 7,500 Riel (S$2.25) per month (3 bags at 2,500 Riel per bag). Occasionally, her son gives her an additional 5,000 (S$1.50) to 10,000 (S$3) Riel to help cover expenses for the children. However, as the children grow, their needs and school expenses are increasing beyond what she can afford. The family receives no government support and does not have a poor certificate. However, the village chief has offered to issue them a “Risk Family Certificate,” which only provides free hospital fees. Their grandmother decided to send Yuth and his siblings to HVPV so that they can be taken care of and able to go to school.
