Family background

Pheab Srey Taen is a 6-year-old girl currently studying in Grade 1. She attends school without enough textbooks, as her parents cannot afford to buy them. Her father works as a village laborer, earning about US$100 (approximately SGD 140) per month, while her mother is a housewife. The father’s income is insufficient to cover the family’s daily needs, and they have incurred debt to buy food and other necessities. Because they are living in poverty, the family also receives government support of 54,000 riels per month (approximately SGD 17).
