Family background

Then and Chanthy are sisters. Their father passed away, and five years ago, their mother left the family and has since been uncontactable. Left behind were the two sisters and their younger brother, cared for by their elderly grandparents. Living in poverty, their grandparents do not own a rice field and recently received a modest house donated by a kind benefactor in Cambodia. To make ends meet, they work as daily laborers, planting rice for other villagers whenever work is available. On days without jobs, they search for small fish, snails, or crabs to feed the children. As the children grow, so do their needs — but with limited income, the grandparents struggle to provide for them and cannot afford to send them to school. Wanting a better future for their grandchildren, they made the decision to send Then and Chanthy to HVPV, hoping that education will open doors to brighter opportunities and a life beyond poverty.
